November is here, which means it’s time to start preparing your house for the holidays! Now, you’ve likely seen or heard of the highly acclaimed Christmas movie, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and the famous scene of Clark Griswold hanging Christmas lights all over his house. As much as you likely laughed at the scene, it’s important to remember it’s just a movie, and the way Clark Griswold hung his lights is not how you should hang yours. This year, our Panama City roofing company wants to make sure you know how to hang holiday lights safely.

Plan Ahead

Before you get ahead of yourself, make sure you have a plan of attack. First, decide where on your house you want to hang your lights. Popular areas to hang Christmas lights include:

  • Along the roofline
  • Around windows and doors
  • Atop bushes and around tree trunks
  • Along pathways and driveways

Whatever you do, please do not hang lights on your roof!

Secure Your Ladder

Ladders can be hazardous if you do not use them correctly or test them beforehand. Take Clark Griswold, for example. Remember when he fell backward on his ladder? In real life, you would end up in the hospital with a serious concussion (or worse). Make sure your ladder is in good condition and that you know how to use it correctly before you start hanging lights. If you’re uncomfortable with ladders, our Panama City roofing company highly suggests you enlist help from a person or company with experience hanging Christmas lights.

Use the Right Installation Tools

There are specific techniques you should follow when you string lights. For instance, when you hang lights along the roofline, do not use staples or nails to secure them. This will pierce through the roof’s surface and ultimately cause damage. Instead, use an all-purpose light clip and attach them to the gutter or the roof. As a Panama City metal roof contractor, we find these clips to be much safer and beneficial than nails or staples.
